At the Center for Reconciliation Studies, researchers from various disciplines in the humanities and text sciences work together to develop an empirically based concept of "reconciliation" and a theory to explain reconciliation processes.

About us

Research Objectives

When, why and how is "reconciliation" achieved in different cultures - after a ceasefire or a first public commitment to peace? How are the terms “reconciliation” and “peace” used in different cultural and historical contexts, when and why? Scientists research these questions and develop a "paternalism-free" working definition of "reconciliation" that enables a dialogue with the cooperation partners and future-oriented cooperation in the field of development policy.

Quo Vadis Middle East?

Seit dem 7. Oktober 2023 und der darauf folgenden Welle von Gewalt ist der Bedarf an gemeinsamen, inklusiven Lösungsansätzen größer denn je. Die Konferenzreihe „Quo Vadis Middle East?“ bietet seit 2023 ein einzigartiges Forum, in dem Vertreterinnen und Vertreter aus Politik, Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft zusammenkommen, um Wege zu Frieden, Verständigung und regionaler Kooperation auszuloten.

Podiumsdiskussion: Konflikttransformation im Fokus: Ansätze im Wandel und aktuelle Herausforderungen Mit dem Ziel, unterschiedliche Perspektiven zu verbinden, den Dialog zu fördern, Brücken zwischen Theorie und Praxis zu schlagen und gemeinsam über die transformativen Potenziale von Konflikten nachzudenken, lädt das Zentrum für Versöhnungsforschung zu drei Podiumsdiskussionen ein. Expert:innen aus Wissenschaft, Politik und Zivilgesellschaft diskutieren aktuelle Herausforderungen und Chancen von Konflikttransformation, Friedensförderung und Versöhnung in einer zunehmend polarisierten Welt. Globale und lokale Entwicklungen stellen die Konflikttransformation vor neue Herausforderungen. Diskutiert wird, wie bestehende Ansätze weiterentwickelt und in der Praxis umgesetzt werden können. Call for Papers: Edited Volume: Activism in Exile - Reimagining Agency and Protection in an Era of Crisis

This edited volume has two motivations. First, a growing awareness that multiple contemporary crises — populism, conflicts, shrinking civic space, climate change, austerity — are combining to push more and more human rights defenders and activists into exile. Second, the volume emerges from a specific research project. The project is a collaboration between the Centre for Reconciliation Studies, University of Bonn (Germany), and the UNESCO Chair, Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Expansion of Political Space at the Centre for Applied Human Rights, University of York (UK), funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, and titled "Activists in Exile in an Era of Mass Displacement: Universities as Sites of Protection and Supporters of Agency for Activists from Russia and Myanmar". The research has a particular focus on Russian activists in exile in the Czech Republic and Myanmar activists in exile in Thailand.

Call for Papers: Colloquium on Peace, Conflict and Reconciliation Studies

The Bonner Center for Reconciliation Studies (BZV) of the University of Bonn and the Bonn International Centre on Conflict Studies (bicc) are pleased to announce the First Colloquium on Peace, Conflict and Reconciliation Studies, to be held in Bonn on 29 January 2026. This joint initiative aims to bring together early-career scholars working on issues of peacebuilding, reconciliation, and conflict transformation. We invite PhD candidates as well as PostDocs to present and discuss their ongoing research in a collegial and supportive environment. The colloquium will provide a space for intellectual exchange and constructive feedback. It also aims to establish a regional network of researchers, promoting sustained dialogue, collaborative research, knowledge exchange, and professional development in the field.
