At the Center for Reconciliation Studies, researchers from various disciplines in the humanities and text sciences work together to develop an empirically based concept of "reconciliation" and a theory to explain reconciliation processes.

About us

Research Objectives

When, why and how is "reconciliation" achieved in different cultures - after a ceasefire or a first public commitment to peace? How are the terms “reconciliation” and “peace” used in different cultural and historical contexts, when and why? Scientists research these questions and develop a "paternalism-free" working definition of "reconciliation" that enables a dialogue with the cooperation partners and future-oriented cooperation in the field of development policy.

Versöhnung – eine Utopie? 13.01.2026

Schon seit einigen Jahren spricht man über die Entwicklung eines »neuen Antisemitismus«, der seinen Ausdruck einerseits in einer neuen verbalen Radikalität gegenüber Israel und andererseits in einer neuen Gewaltbereitschaft gegenüber Juden und Jüdinnen findet. Antisemitismus und die Erinnerung an den Holocaust sind zu einem System des Denkens und Handelns verschmolzen, doch dieser neue Antisemitismus entstand nach der Shoah und zeigt sich in verschiedenen Nationen, religiösen Zugehörigkeiten und politischen Gruppierungen. In der Auftaktveranstaltung von VERSÖHNUNG – EINE UTOPIE? diskutieren der israelische Politologe José Brunner und der liberale Oberrabbiner Andreas Nachama das Verhältnis von Versöhnung und Unversöhnlichkeit. Dabei beleuchten sie die Entwicklung des neuen Antisemitismus und untersuchen, welche Rolle die Politik des Staates Israel bei dessen Aufkommen und Verschärfung in den letzten Jahren spielt.

IX. Tagung des deutschsprachigen Netzwerks für Versöhnungsforschung

Am 28. und 29. November 2025 fand in Bonn die IX. Tagung des deutschsprachigen Netzwerks für Versöhnungsforschung statt – zwei intensive Tage voller interdisziplinärer Impulse, internationaler Perspektiven und bereichernder Diskussionen. Die Veranstaltung wurde in Kooperation mit dem Jena Center for Reconciliation StudiesJena Center for Reconciliation Studies (JCRS) durchgeführt.

Call for Papers: Edited Volume: Activism in Exile - Reimagining Agency and Protection in an Era of Crisis

This edited volume has two motivations. First, a growing awareness that multiple contemporary crises — populism, conflicts, shrinking civic space, climate change, austerity — are combining to push more and more human rights defenders and activists into exile. Second, the volume emerges from a specific research project. The project is a collaboration between the Centre for Reconciliation Studies, University of Bonn (Germany), and the UNESCO Chair, Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Expansion of Political Space at the Centre for Applied Human Rights, University of York (UK), funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, and titled "Activists in Exile in an Era of Mass Displacement: Universities as Sites of Protection and Supporters of Agency for Activists from Russia and Myanmar". The research has a particular focus on Russian activists in exile in the Czech Republic and Myanmar activists in exile in Thailand.

Call for Papers: Colloquium on Peace, Conflict and Reconciliation Studies

The Bonner Center for Reconciliation Studies (BZV) of the University of Bonn and the Bonn International Centre on Conflict Studies (bicc) are pleased to announce the First Colloquium on Peace, Conflict and Reconciliation Studies, to be held in Bonn on 29 January 2026. This joint initiative aims to bring together early-career scholars working on issues of peacebuilding, reconciliation, and conflict transformation. We invite PhD candidates as well as PostDocs to present and discuss their ongoing research in a collegial and supportive environment. The colloquium will provide a space for intellectual exchange and constructive feedback. It also aims to establish a regional network of researchers, promoting sustained dialogue, collaborative research, knowledge exchange, and professional development in the field.
