At the Bonn Center for Reconciliation Studies, researchers from diverse disciplines—such as the humanities, social sciences, law, and history—work collaboratively to develop theories and methodologies aimed at understanding, analysing, and promoting processes of reconciliation.

About us

Research Objectives

When, why and how is "reconciliation" achieved in different cultures - after a ceasefire or a first public commitment to peace? How are the terms “reconciliation” and “peace” used in different cultural and historical contexts, when and why? Scientists research these questions and develop a "paternalism-free" working definition of "reconciliation" that enables a dialogue with the cooperation partners and future-oriented cooperation in the field of development policy.

Erste Kolloquium ‘Peace, Conflict and Reconciliation Studies’

Am 29. Januar 2026 veranstalteten das Bonner Zentrum für Versöhnungsforschung (BZV) gemeinsam mit dem Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies (BICC) das First Colloquium on Peace, Conflict and Reconciliation Studies in Bonn. Ziel der Veranstaltung war es, aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten zu zentralen Fragestellungen der Friedens-, Konflikt- und Versöhnungsforschung in einem interdisziplinären Rahmen zu diskutieren. Die Veranstaltung wurde gemeinsam von Rosario Figari-Layús (BZV) und Conrad Schetter (BICC) organisiert.

Podiumsdiskussion „Zwischen Erinnerung und Neuanfang"

Am 20. Januar 2026 fand an der Universität Bonn die dritte Podiumsdiskussion „Zwischen Erinnerung und Neuanfang – Versöhnung und Transitional Justice in Post-Konflikt-Kontexten“ statt. Die Veranstaltung bildete den Abschluss unserer mehrteiligen Podiumsdiskussionsreihe, in der aktuelle Herausforderungen von Versöhnungsprozessen in verschiedenen Regionen der Welt thematisiert wurden.

Am 13. Januar 2026 fand im Theater Bonn die Veranstaltung „Versöhnung – eine Utopie? Kunst und Wissenschaft im Gespräch“ statt. In einem interdisziplinären Dialog wurde das Spannungsfeld von Versöhnung, Erinnerung und gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung reflektiert.

Call for Papers: Special Issue of Peace Review Between Co-existence and Reconciliation

Rosario Figari Layus, Conrad Schetter and Esther Gardei are preparing a special issue of Peace Review. Researchers are welcome to submit contributions for a special issue that investigates localexperiences of peaceful coexistence and collaborative relations emerging within contexts of ongoing violence – so-called “islands of peace.” The issue aims to address questions such as: What factors enable the creation and endurance of these initiatives and spaces? Who are the principal actors involved, and how do they navigate the complexities of protracted conflict? What challenges do they face in sustaining and safeguarding these fragile environments of peaceful interaction? Submissions from scholars in the social sciences and humanities are welcome. The deadline for submissions is 30 April 2026.
